There are lots of ways that you can be asked to share your knowledge and expertise as a guest contributor to other people’s content.
From being interviewed on someone else’s podcast, to writing a guest post for another website, to contributing to a membership site training session…the possibilities are endless. It’s a great thing to be asked! Especially, because it can expose you to a whole new audience and position you as an expert in your field. However, it can be time-consuming and require a lot of work.
So, how can you make the most of the opportunity?
Well, did you know that you can repurpose your guest appearances?
For example, you can feature your guest interview on your own podcast or video show, or repost your guest article elsewhere (perhaps reworded), share video footage of you talk on social media…there are plenty of ways to make the most out of your hard work and have more quality content to share with your own audience.
Here are five ways that you can repurpose guest appearances to give you the best return on investment.
1. Repurposing your guest appearance on a podcast
As a content creator and business owner, I am often asked to appear as a guest on other people’s podcasts.
I quite often have guests on my podcast too, it’s a great way to share ideas and provide my audience with helpful insights from different perspectives.
Usually, if you have been a guest on someone’s podcast, the podcast host will share the episode with you once it has gone live. They might also send any visuals or audiograms that they created for social media. The whole idea is you share with your audience that you were on the show.
However, can you do more with your guest appearance than just promote it on social media with quote graphics and audiograms?
Yes! One thing you might be able to do is re-use the audio from your interview on your own podcast if you have one.
You’ll have to get the audio file and ask permission from the host first. They may say no, but more often than not they’ll say yes since having their interview on another podcast will help bring more attention to their show too! You need to agree how you’ll frame it though — explaining at the start of the show that you’re sharing your interview on someone else’s podcast etc.
For example, one of our clients, Mike Richards, did exactly this. He appeared on The Content 10x Podcast for episode 94 as a guest and we talked about why he launched a podcast, the journey he’s been on, the results so far, and how he’s worked with us to repurpose his content.
After we recorded the interview, Mike realized that the 60th episode of his podcast was coming up. So, he kindly asked me if he could use the audio from our interview on his podcast because it would be so useful for his audience to hear the history of the podcast. Of course, I said yes.
TOP TIP:
Remember to record a brand-new intro on your podcast so your listeners know what is going on! Think about how you can apply the points discussed in the interview to your own audience. How is the interview interesting or helpful to them? You might want to edit the audio and only share certain parts.
Once Mike had repurposed his interview with me for his own podcast, we went about repurposing it by:
- Pulling short engaging clips from the interview to create audiograms and video teasers
- Picking out our favorite quotes and creating graphics for social media
- Sharing everything on social media with great, engaging copy

2. Repurposing your guest appearance on a video show
Being a guest on a video show could consist of anything from an interview to a discussion, a Q&A or even a debate! This is great content for you to repurpose!
If you are a podcaster, you could ask permission to take the audio from the video and use it in your podcast, following the steps mentioned above.
However, there are some other ways you could make the most of your guest feature on a video show.
Sharing the video on your website
If you have permission to use the video file then why not take the video interview and upload it onto your website?
You could write a blog post on the topic to accompany the video. You can then share both the video and the blog post on social media.
Again, remember to share everything you repurpose with the host who asked you to be on their show. I’m sure that they’ll appreciate it and possibly share with their audience too.
Sharing the video on your YouTube channel
If you have a YouTube channel, you could ask to post the interview on there. You could upload the full interview or pick out your favorite short clips between 1–5 minutes long. You could then upload the shorter clips as separate videos on your channel.
I’ve noticed that many video podcasters do this. They will upload the full podcast onto their YouTube channel. Then, they will pick out the most impactful moments and upload them as separate videos with great titles.
This way, you are getting loads of video content out of your guest appearance on someone else’s show!
Sharing the video on social media
Are you due to record a guest interview? Make the most of that content! You could transform your guest interview on a video show into a variety of different assets to share on social media.
You could take snippets of the video and create short teaser videos for all the platforms.
Here’s a post that teaches you how to do this!
3. Repurposing your guest blog post or article
I often get asked to write guest blog posts or articles for other websites including Podcast Business Journal, Youpreneur and Podcast.co. I love sharing my ideas, but these posts do take a lot of time to put together, research and write. So, let’s make the most out of them!
Create a podcast
If you have a podcast, you could take the topic of your guest post and create a podcast episode based on the ideas you shared in the post. Since you’ve done all of the research and made your notes already, most of the hard work is done!
This is a great way to record an episode on a well-researched idea and you can link back to your guest post in the show notes. Podcasts are also really easy to share on social media as you can make so many assets out of one episode.
Create a video or live Q&A
Similar to creating a podcast episode, you could film a video discussing the topic in more detail. Then you have video footage, for sharing AND repurposing!
Another idea could be recording a live Q&A, letting people ask more in-depth questions on the topic at hand. For example, you could share the blog post/article with your audience before going live. And, ask them to think of some questions to ask you in advance.
PDF Guide
You could create a free downloadable guide for your audience by taking the key points made in your guest post. You could then put these key ideas into a short, actionable guide.
This would be a really useful resource for your audience and it could be used as an incentive to sign up to your email list.
Social media visuals
As mentioned with all of the above, you could use your guest post to create some fantastic social visuals. You could take your favorite key points or quotes and create some brilliant eye-catching graphics out of them.
Reposting
Once you have asked permission (you may get a ‘no’, not all guest posts can be shared elsewhere), you could repost your blog or article on your own website and other sites. This will dramatically spread the reach and your hard work will pay off significantly!
4. Repurposing speaking at an event
Speaking at events is a brilliant way to gain recognition and grow your brand. However, it can take days, even weeks of your time to prepare, travel and actually attend the event. So, you want to make the very most of the content from the event.
If you are about to attend an event yourself, make sure you check out my podcast and blog post on great ways to create content out of an event.
In the meantime, here are some ways you can make the most out of speaking at an event.
Ask to use the video and/or audio
Many events tend to be filmed or the audio is recorded, making it easy for you to create a wealth of content afterwards! You’ll have to get in touch with the organizer and ask for permission to use the audio and video first.
Once they’ve said yes, you can use the audio for a special podcast episode or the video for an episode on your YouTube channel or website. Remember to create your own intro to explain to listeners and viewers what is going on and why it’s so exciting!
The video and audio can then be turned into multiple social media assets.
Create blog posts
Before you attend the event, it’s worth writing a blog post to let people know that you are going, where to find you and when you are speaking.
You can then build up some excitement surrounding the event!
Afterwards, you can create a behind-the-scenes blog post all about the event, how you found it and any funny anecdotes that happened along the way.
5. Repurposing a guest appearance in a membership community
Another thing I often get asked to do is to deliver a masterclass or video training for someone’s membership community. This is a great way to reach a larger audience and position yourself as the expert. But, you guessed it, these classes take a long time to put together!
Thankfully, there are lots of ways you can repurpose your masterclass or video training for your own audience.
You could ask for the video or audio from the masterclass and then take short clips to use on social media or your website. This will demonstrate how you are the expert and lead to more people trusting your business. With your contribution being towards membership content that members pay for, it’s reasonable that the membership site owner may not want you to share the content. In that case, you just need to be more creative!
For example, turn the research that you did for the talk into a blog post and social content. Create a new video for your audience based off the video you recorded for the membership.
Check out this post on assessing when to say ‘yes’ to this kind of request.
In conclusion
As you can see, the repurposing opportunities really are there when you agree to be a guest on someone else’s content platform.
It’s great to share your knowledge and reach a wider audience but it’s important to keep in mind your own return on investment too. Hopefully, I’ve provided some really useful ways for you to create great content from your guest appearances and benefit from them.
Now that you’ve been inspired, how are you going to repurpose your guest appearances?
