In this article, I challenge you to think of ways that you can add more impact when repurposing content. Specifically, I show you four ways that you can give your repurposed content that extra bit of “oomph”.

When we talk about repurposing content, we are usually looking at ways that we can take one piece of content — or should I say one clearly communicated message — and package it into different formats to reach new audiences.

Rather than simply repackaging your original message, you could look at ways to expand on that message and add more impact…let’s get a bit sassy!

After all, we want your content to get the attention it deserves. You’ve spent a lot of time creating awesome content., but…It all boils down to this…

The internet is a noisy place.

Sometimes it can feel like standing in the middle of the most crowded place on earth (which is Mongkok in Hong Kong, by the way) and trying to direct people to your latest podcast, video or blog post is a challenge.

If you want people to take notice, why not add a little more edge to your repurposed content.

Also…and this is something that I talk about a lot — you need to respect the platform. Remember the kind of content that people expect on each platform AND make the most of it. For example, IGTV is brand new, have you checked that out? Could it work for you? How could you spin your current content to make it something fit for IGTV?

Let’s get stuck in…here are my 4 suggestions for adding more impact when repurposing content…

1. Host a Live Q&A

Are you a fan of going live on video?

Do you love getting in front of the camera and developing strong connections with your audience?

If so, hosting a live Q&A may be a really good repurposing option for you.

Whenever you post a new blog post, video, podcast, or whatever content you prefer, it’s worth following it up with a live Q&A with your audience.

You can go live on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or you could even run a live webinar.

I know what you’re thinking…what if no one shows up? And if that happens, how will you find a big enough rock to crawl under?

First of all, that’s not likely to happen.

How do I know?

Because you’re going to tell people about it.

Create content announcing your upcoming live Q&A and publish it across your social media. In fact, why not record a video and tell your audience you’re hosting a live Q&A at the time and date of your choosing. Share your video far and wide on social media and email your subscribers. To make an impact when repurposing content you want to share your videos as much as possible.

Putting yourself out there to answer questions about your content demonstrates to your audience depth of knowledge.

If you interviewed someone in your latest podcast episode or video, ask them if they’d like to come along and answer a few questions for your audience. This is a great way to create more excitement around your content. It also opens up a pool of a potentially untapped audience who want to hear from you and your special guest.

2. Run a Twitter Chat

Have you ever heard of a Twitter chat?

A Twitter chat is when a group of people discuss a topic on Twitter using an assigned hashtag based on a particular subject. Participants follow the designated hashtag to keep up with the discussion. Usually they last for about 1 hour — so they are live and present an opportunity for your audience to talk to you and to each other.

When I said I wanted to encourage you to think of ways to repurpose content beyond your existing message, this is exactly the kind of thing that I mean.

You can make an impact when repurposing content by hosting a Twitter chat. Take the message/discussion, talk about it with your audience and delve deep into the topic.

If you want to host a Twitter chat, you’ll be glad to know it’s really simple.

How to run a Twitter chat to make an impact when repurposing content

The first step is to let people know the time and day you’ll run your Twitter chat. Build the momentum and choose a designated hashtag that’s relevant to the topic you want to discuss. So in this case, it would be based on your original piece of content.

When you publish your content, so for example your most recent podcast episode, be sure to let everyone know that you’ll be making yourself available to chat about the podcast topic in your Twitter chat.

When you’re hosting a Twitter chat, it’s up to you to keep the discussion alive. Post a few questions and start engaging with your audience.

Usually the host will start questions with Q1, Q2, Q3…etc, and participants will answer with A1, A2, A3…etc. Twitter chats can be fun, sociable and informative. They’re a great way to make a serious impact when repurposing content.

What’s great about Twitter chats is that it’s like sitting at a virtual coffee shop. Everyone chats and networks with each other. Plus, it’s a great way to get exposure for yourself and your business!

Thinking of hosting a Twitter chat but second guessing yourself?

Here are a few ways that Twitter chats can make an impact when repurposing content:

  • Generate interest in your content and increase traffic to your podcast, video or blog etc.
  • It gives you the chance to share your expertise with like-minded people
  • You can learn something new about the topic of discussion and your target audience. What do they want to see from you? Host a Twitter chat to find out!
  • Spread brand awareness without any hefty marketing fees!
  • Engage with customers and network from the comfort of your home…sounds like heaven!
  • And of course, it helps to grow your Twitter following!

3. Jump on Instagram Stories

If you have a following on Instagram, it’s time to get on Instagram Stories.

You can add a lot of impact and build interest around your new content by letting people on Instagram Stories know it exists…

It would be great if you could just create content, publish it, and that’s it. You can sit back, relax and wait for your audience to consume it without lifting a finger…. oh, that would be a dream come true, right?

Unfortunately, that’s not the case for most of us. If we want people to find our content, we have to promote it and shout about it from the rooftops!

Instagram Stories lets you have fun with your content. You can talk about your latest content and add more of a personal touch. After all, people love to connect with people, not robots. So, let your audience get to know the person behind the brand.

Do you want to know how you can increase engagement on Instagram?

Try running a poll on Instagram Stories!

You can ask a question related to your content. It can literally be about anything, so get creative! A poll is an excellent way to feed more content for yourself. Not to mention it can also be used to gather information about what your audience wants to see from you.

There are other fun features in Instagram Stories too — most recently they introduced the ‘ask a question’ feature. Again, you could use this to let your audience ask you questions about your most recent piece of content.

4. Record an Interview

Everybody loves a bit of drama, whether we want to admit it or not.

And just like you, your audience craves entertainment.

They want to see something they’ve never seen before. Something that will make them sit on the edge of their seat and leave them wanting more.

But how can you make your videos have this kind of impact?

It’s simple.

Invite a guest on who has an opposing viewpoint to yours. Then have an argument friendly discussion about why you don’t agree with each other! This gives your content an extra edge, and people will love it. After all, a one-sided discussion is just boring, right?

When you bring contrasting views into the equation, you spark people’s interest. Now, I’m not suggesting you have a full blown-out argument in front of the camera but rather, have a friendly debate about the topic!

Having a guest with an opposing viewpoint shows your audience that you’re bold, and you’re willing to discuss different opinions and debate them.

In Conclusion

Get edgy with your content repurposing.

Try and think of ways that you can not only slice and dice your content, but add a squeeze of lemon and a twist of lime!!

If you take your content and provide ways for your audience to interact with you live, you can demonstrate your depth of knowledge. You can also build strong connections.

Being bold enough to invite a discussion with someone with an opposing viewpoint — this will spark interest and help you to stand out.

Whatever you decide to do, think outside the box and don’t be afraid to get creative! It’s important to make an impact when repurposing content!
